There Is No Such Thing as a Perfect Product
But there is always more we can do
Sustainability conversations often search for perfection. The perfect product. The zero impact solution. The silver bullet that fixes everything.
The truth is simpler and harder. There is no such thing as a perfect product.
Every product uses resources. Every product has a supply chain. Every product moves from one place to another. Even the most sustainable option has an impact somewhere. What matters is not pretending otherwise, but being honest about it and committing to doing better at every stage.
At Recorra Workplace Supplies, that belief shapes how we source, sell and deliver everything we do.
Why perfection is the wrong goal
Chasing perfection often leads to greenwashing. Claims of zero impact or guilt free products rarely stand up to scrutiny, and they distract from the real work that needs doing.
We believe sustainability is about progress, not absolutes. It is about understanding trade offs, reducing harm and designing systems that improve over time.
A recycled product still uses energy. A reused product still needs collecting and cleaning. Even a carbon reported supply chain still relies on data that is not always perfect. Acknowledging this is not a weakness. It is the starting point for meaningful action.
How we choose products more responsibly
Rather than claiming to sell perfect products, we focus on making better choices and helping our customers do the same.
That means prioritising products with high recycled content, lower embodied carbon and credible certifications. It means working with suppliers who are transparent about materials, labour standards and manufacturing processes. It also means questioning whether a product is needed at all, or whether reuse or service based alternatives make more sense.
This thinking sits at the heart of our Sustainable Procurement Project. Instead of simply listing greener alternatives, we work with customers to review what they buy, why they buy it and how it fits into their wider sustainability goals. The aim is not to swap one product for another and tick a box. The aim is to reduce impact across the whole procurement decision.
Doing more than just selling products
Products are only one part of the picture. How they move matters just as much.
That is why we invest in lower carbon delivery methods, including zero emission cargo bike deliveries where geography allows. It is also why we consolidate orders, reduce unnecessary packaging and avoid rushed next day deliveries when they are not genuinely needed.
Delivering better is not always the easiest option, but it is often the most impactful. Transport emissions can quickly undo the benefits of a well chosen product if they are ignored.
Transparency over perfection
We are upfront that our range is not flawless. No supplier is. No supply chain is. But we are equally clear about the measures we take to improve year on year.
That includes reviewing suppliers, refining logistics, expanding circular product lines and continuously improving the data we share with customers. It also includes being honest when something is not the right solution and working collaboratively to find a better one.
Sustainability is not a destination you arrive at. It is a direction of travel.
Progress you can stand behind
Choosing more sustainable office supplies should not rely on blind trust or bold claims. It should be based on transparency, measurable improvement and a willingness to ask difficult questions.
There may be no such thing as a perfect product, but there is such a thing as a better system. One where procurement decisions reduce waste, cut carbon and support circular outcomes over time.
That is the system we are building, one practical improvement at a time.
